Even with his "proviso" at the top, it's so so so so hard not to judge Eoin after his latest short story.

I'm not sure if he's trying to be edgy (at your age, Eoin? really?) or what, but this?

This face belongs to that social anomaly, the gay air hostess. The gay air hostess is another beast entirely separate from real life, it's emasculated, yet bizarrely has a position of power in that this creature, clearly wishing it was a female getting a good ride from behind, can tell bigger more ostensibly male types what to do. And they do it.

And the fact that he continually refers to this one particular male flight attendant as "It (and always capitalized, oh god)?" I can't. I will also say that I haven't made ti all the way through, so maybe I'm judging too harshly and the "character" whose POV we see this from actually gets bashed with a unicorn tiara to death, but...yeah.

ETA: Eoin "explains:"
Em, 'theharshknight', it is a story, a tongue in cheek satire, you should read David Sedaris..... There is an eminent problem is writing sometimes because people take things as literal. I have many gay oriented friends, and it is not even about that, it is a small commentary on a certain aspect of life and the character of 'I' is a creation, not a reality.

So...he's just a shit writer (like [livejournal.com profile] wldcatsprstr_14 said) who has no foresight into audience reception?

ETA2: He deleted. I don't want to repost it here, but an anon on mm copy-pasted the whole thing here. I do warn for homophobia, if you choose to read.

What did I do on the evening of Jan 3, you ask? Argued with Eoin Macken online. SMH

IMO, calling something fiction doesn't exempt it from being a pile of offensive shit. This wasn't fiction. There was no story! It's simply meta.

You're 100% right. And honestly, it could've been good. I've read things like this, meta, that were good and poignant and deep and philosophical. This, however, was not. Dear god, I can't even begin to look at him the same. :/

TBH, he's not a very good writer to begin with. I think it was supposed to be poignant and deep but because he's a bad writer, it just came out as offensive and patently ridiculous. I've watched his short films and read his other stuff and he's just not cut out for writing. I think he had a good idea but poor ability to execute made it the mess it is.

I can't say I'll look at him differently since I honestly don't think that he IS that kind of person. He's just a shit writer.

If I could any tiny spec of a point in this story other than to humiliate and offend gay men, I'd say he was just a shit writer, but there's no story there other than someone being a homophobic asshole.

I'll read it again and see if that changes my opinion.

TBH I don't put much stock in his writing already just because I think he tries a lot of stuff that just falls flat and ends up being stupid as hell. So maybe I'm already so jaded that I can't be sufficiently put out by it.

Yeah, and he only made it worse with the replies he gave me and a number of other fen on twitter when we confronted him about it. Throwing in "I did a photoshoot for Gay Times" and "it's comedic satire" for good measure. :/ Some people should just not talk, I think.

I...think? But then it just went all haywire when people asked him about it and we confronted him on twitter and he was just really unapologetic and dickish.

It's funny he compares himself to David Sedaris...thing is, maybe if he had an ounce of knowledge about writing and the audience he's presenting this to, he wouldn't have been in this whole mess.

He knows that people are going to take it badly. But he does it anyway because I honestly don't think he gives a fuck. It's obvious from his writing that he has a very dark mentality. Pair that with shit writing skills and you have shit that goes beyond the realm of offensive and stupid.

*sigh* I was hoping, after reading initial reactions, that it was one of those things where if we just ignored the source, and tried to read it as if it was written by someone we didn't know, that it would be okay. But yeah... I just... I honestly don't even know.

I don't understand why he would've posted something so terrible as that. I mean, maybe it's because I'm a fanfic writer, but damn... do you not even think about your audience at ALL? Especially if you're going to share some of your own writing? I mean, that's just... ugh. IDEK. Honestly, Eoin. Honestly.

I really don't think he thought of his audience or the wide array of experiences and points of view, and how something that was posted so out of context and really nto framed properly to be judged on any literary merit at all would come off. It didn't help that he then turned around and when questioned basically became more and more of an asshole in this whole situation. :(

We've talked about it so all my thoughts have disappeared by now but it was offensive. He classed it as a fictional anecdote in his initial disclaimer which does nothing to dissuade me from the idea that he's sitting in his seat in the plane thinking what his POV character is thinking, thinking that it'd make a good satirical (?) story and then posting it for an audience, expecting they, what, see how edgy he is that he doesn't shy away from writing homophobe POVs? ( I think he exists within a filmmaking circle of the edgy and shunned from the mainstream hence doing things on their own, so that'd, well, be some background on that) That works when you're 16 and think that edgy is the new black. It doesn't work when you actually exist as an adult within society (nvm the layer of who his audience is and why they're his audience ... if he worked for the BBC he'd be in some shit over it).

His reaction to the reactions? Digging himself only deeper, all with pulling it (so clearly some of the criticism hit him as being correct or possible causing waves in the future, why not leave it up otherwise) and the semi flounce at the end - levels of maturity = 0.

It's offensive and it's not ok, the guise of art is just bs.

The clay feet Eoin M. revealed with that blog entry reach all the way up to his hips, I swear! Gonna have to do a major mind-edit to even look at him on Merlin from now on.

I read it, in it's entirety because if I am gonna judge a man, I want to have the full story. I screen-capped it because as I was in the middle of reading it, I was informed he had taken it down. You aren't judging too harshly, he didn't redeem himself at any point in that pointless narrative.

It was beyond offensive. The manner in which he dehumanized the object of his venom was sickening. This was no piece of speculative fiction, these were his thoughts. Anyone with an IQ higher than that of a sea sponge could tell the difference.

His trying to pass this off as fiction was feeble and transparent. There was no plot or point, it was just a rant. I think any of his fans that bought his excuses were just trying to protect themselves from the crushing realization that someone they admired turned out to be such a creep.

A creep and a truly crap writer to boot.

I almost wish I hadn't read it, it makes me so damn angry!

The anger is gone though the disgust lives on. I've no interest in revisiting that piece of filth he called literature. Satire my ass!

I witnessed the twitter antics as well. I stand by my assessment, Eoin is a creep.

And now I am done with it. I have to go finish a story where Gwaine is a lovely sweet, gay man and that shall soothe me!

At the 'I have gay friends' excuse I just switch off. Don't presume you know people and the things they still have to struggle against just because you happen to hang out with them sometimes. Oh, and apparently because he did the shoot with Gay Times that means he can't possibly be homophobic in any way as well. Though I image there would have been payment for that (do correct me if I'm wrong). Don't fool yourself, Macken, you're still rather C-list, so wherever there's work.

I was never a big stanner of his (no reason why) but this has basically killed it. If he can actually realise what he's done without jumping on these non-excuses then maybe we could call it lesson learned. Until then, oh hell no.

Date: 2012-01-04 06:43 pm (UTC)

Yeah, I completely agree with everything you've said. And I mean, Gay Times is most likely paid, but also great promotion not only for him but also for the show, so uh...why would he turn it down?

I don't think he learned a lesson, if anything, this has inflated his ego, because he reposted it with another disclaimer and someone did a very very bad Lit Analysis of his "story" - which honestly...we could've all done, if he'd framed it differently and didn't act like a complete asshole on twitter.

Well, it's the whole awkward interaction with someone. Disregarding that the person the narrator is talking about is gay, I would feel incredibly awkward over someone being up in your face trying to tell you what you can and can't do.

If you take away the negative aspects of it, there actually seems to be an underlying message that we need to learn how to respect other people's boundaries. There are people who get criticized for being "prejudiced" about one group or another, and the phrase "homophobic purgatory" seems to my interpretation to encompass the real problem with political correctness, how we hamstring ourselves into these corners afraid to speak out for fear of being mocked.

At least that's my interpretation, it might have been a terrible example to use surface-wise, but situationally, it is what we can all relate to in one way or another.
